Leaving Yellowstone: September 5, 2008

Steaming Mammoth Hot Springs
in the morning from our front porch.
It was 30 degrees.

After breakfast we met a bull elk with
his harem on the front lawn of the dining hall.

Bill just can't walk by a good piano and not play.
The older ladies at the registration desk
were quite appreciative of his playing.

A long shot of the hotel and lodging accommodations at
at Mammoth Hot Springs. Our cabin was near the
top left.

This is the Orange Hot Spring. It is one of the
few that is currently active.

My artsy fartsy landscape shot.

A "long and winding road" that leads through the
inactive part of Mammoth Hot Springs.

When active the hot water kills the trees.
The white deposit is calcium carbonate.
The various colors are either mineral deposits
or live hot water algae.

This is the most famous view of Mammoth Hot Springs.
It shows the front face of a 20 acre mineral deposit.

One of the still active geysers on the face
Mammoth Hot Springs.

An up close and personal meeting with a buffalo!

A long view of the Lamar Valley. It is famous for
fishing, deer, wolves...

...and antelope.

I took this shot of the mountains leaving Yellowstone
since the fog and mist made it look like a double
exposure.
