Ely, NV

Outside of the metropolitan areas, Nevada looks much
like this.

One of the chief economic activities for the people
are mining. Here in Basalt, is a mining operation.

This is a lava flow that moved right to left.

Most of Nevada is located in the Great Basin.
Water flows into it and simply evaporates leaving
white calcite deposits. It's hard to imagine anything
growing in these salt marshes. This was along
Route 6.

Bill searched on line for cheapest gas prices and
could not find any for Coaldale. This is a picture
of Coaldale, population zero. We found many
communities that were facing the same fate.

The remains of a flash flood that flowed from
the mountains, crossing roads and depositing
mud in the dry lake beds.

The varied geology of the mountains in
the Great Basin.

Welcome to Area 52.
You may be more aware of Area 51, which is next door.
Here the government conducts secret testing and
experimentation. Area 52, Tonopah Test Range,
is 625 square miles in area. This is as close as
we dared to venture.

I know this picture is rather grainy, but it shows
the vastness of this area. You are
looking across at 18 miles.
It can be quite hypnotic.
