We stayed in Cooke City, MT last night.
The town in about a half mile long.
There is one Main Street and a few
unpaved roads. Had no cell service.
I found this sign amusing, but they are serious
with the amount of snow they get in Cooke City.
Route 212 takes you to Beartooth Mountain Pass.
This is what we saw at the start of our journey.
Beartooth Mountains. The tallest in the
middle is Beartooth Peak. Unfortunately
the pass was still snowed in so we could not
go all the way through. They hope
to have the pass cleared on June 1st.
The two highest peaks in Beartooth Mountains.
Beartooth Range of Mountains.
Since the Beartooth Pass was closed,
we opted for another scenic route.
The Clarke River along the byway.
The changing topography is clear
in this photo.
Bill had a good time feeding several
ground squirrels at a stop along the way.
The ground squirrels sent a message to the
chipmunks at this overlook that Bill
had trail mix for them!
One of Bill's new chippie friends!
We felt like we were on top of the world.
You can see for miles and see the
many switchbacks we had to take.
From mountains to grazing land
for cattle and sheep.
