Center court of our hotel from last night in Cortez, CO.
I can't believe I finally made it to Arizona!
One of hundreds of buttes we saw along Route 160
and Route 191.
The land and vegetation began to change radically.
There is less vegetation and more sand.
A red rock monolith near Rock Point.
This is pronounced canyon "duh shay".
This branch Canyon De Chelly is Canyon De Muerte
(Canyon of Death).
I am standing beside the marker that
explains the massacre of two Indians
by Spanish soldiers in the 16th century.
A side canyon.
The flat fertile canyon bottom is farmed today
by the Navajo Indians. The entire Canyon De Chelly
is part of the Navajo Nation.
An early Anasazi dwelling showing the
migration from the canyon floor to the
second level in a cliff.
The river was turned at a right angle by the
hardness of the opposing rock.
Attention class! If you
don't behave yourself,
I'm going to throw you and your pet
over this cliff!!!
(I lose more students that way.)
